A Flying Trip to the Lake District

News

The Lake District is one of the most beautiful parts of the country and is the largest National Park in England.  However if you live in the Midlands or south of England, the journey can be quite daunting if you are only looking for a weekend break, with a choice between traffic jams on the M6 or changing trains two or three times.  Flying up by helicopter however takes away the strain - we recently flew up to Windermere in less than two hours from our Cranfield base.

The Lakes have a lot to offer, whether you want to go hill-walking, sailing or visiting some of the many attractions in the area.  Flying up by helicopter from the south-east also gives you the opportunity to route north over the Peak District National Park, with some spectacular views of heather covered moors on the way during our trip in September.  Approaching the Lakes from the north of Manchester, we saw Blackppol Tower silhouetted by the setting sun, and the expanse of Morecambe Bay.

We landed at the Samling Hotel on the banks of Windermere - a beautiful luxury hotel with amazing views down the length of Windermere.  It is definitely a hotel that we will return to, and can recommend based on what we saw there before going off to the private accommodation where we were staying.  If you are fortunate enough to be in the Lakes with a helicopter, then you have to do some aerial sight seeing!  For a sample of what that might be like, check out the video of the trip to work flown most days by Mark at Honister Slate Mine - spectacular views and great flying!
